The Reason Post-UTME Was Scrapped By FG Revealed

The reason POST UTME was scrapped  has been revealed by former Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, NUC, Professor Peter Okebukola. He said that Nigerian universities deviated from the initial agreement NUC had with Vice-Chancellors in 2004 when Post-UTME was introduced to screen candidates via oral interview and written essay.

While further explaining the reasons Post-UTME was scrapped, Professor Okebukola expatiated on reasons for the introduction of  post-UTME in 2014. He explained that the NUC and the vice-chancellors  found out that they needed to admit into the universities, secondary school leavers who have at least two characteristics – Cognitive competence and Intuitive sense.
Professor Peter Okebukola

The Reasons Government Scrapped Post-UTME Screening!

The former was tested tested by JAMB while institutions were expected to test the latter. ‘’JAMB’s UTME targets only the first characteristic; while the university-level screening should measure the second,’’ he said.
He, however said: ‘’We got the blessing of President Olusegun Obasanjo and the National Assembly to do the following:
  1. maximum charge to candidates for the exercise should be one thousand Naira (N1,000),
  2. candidates should be screened not with the kind of test used by JAMB but through other mechanisms.
According to him, since 2010, both guidelines were ditched by most universities, stressing that universities were conducting the same tests as JAMB, charging at least five times the agreed-cost and not conducting oral interviews and essay screening. Excerpts: VanguardNGR
So, these are the reasons for scrapping of Post-UTME. Do you think the Federal Government is justified to do this? Share your thoughts with us

Scrapping Of Post-UTME Does Not Stop Universities From Screening Students – NUC

UME
The Public Relations officer of the Nigerian Universities Commission, Ibrahim Yakasai, has stated that despite the new directive scrapping the Post-UTME, universities are allowed to screen students sent to them for admission by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
Speaking on NTA, Yakasai said the new directive does not restrict any university from screening students sent to them by the exams board.
Usually, during admission, universities and other schools are allowed to do elementary screening. The screening include actual verification of Jamb slip, crosschecking of documents for admission, medical test, age check and a host of other prerequisite for securing of admission.
You will recall that the Federal Government on Thursday ordered that the examinations usually organised by universities in Nigeria for admission seekers after the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations should be scrapped
